The biography of any living figure will be as good as the author's objectivity, since the cold eye of history plays little part in the evaluations which the writer must make. When it comes to a prince of the Church, in this instance the Cardinal Archbishop of New York, the risk of producing a really adequate life would seem even more hazardous. Yet, Fr. Robert I. Gannon, educator-lecturer-author and close friend of the Cardinal for many years, manages to paint a portrait which depicts ""the historical"" character of this ""ordinary"" American who rose from humble beginnings to one of the highest and most influential positions in the Church. It is evident that this huge tome with many illustrations will become a basic reference work.
