This is another title in the new Bruce Impact series which is planned to cover the work of scholars in Scripture, theology, philosophy, mathematics, history and the physical and social sciences. Conscious of the highly confused and confusing state of philosophical thought as it pertaina to moral principles, the authors sketch in the outlines of various schools -- from the development of the moral sense of the Earl of Shaftesbury through the situation ethics, psychoanalysis and existentialism of our own times. Unfortunately, the authors ""heavy-up"" their otherwise good summaries by sticking to ""philosophese"" (if a professional in this field ever begins to use understandable equivalents of the abstract jargon of philosophy, he will be hailed as a hero by the millions who want to know what they means.) Even no the authors here have supplied those interested with a relatively brief introduction to what important, modern ethical theories hold, closing with their own views of what they think is essential to any valid treatment of ethics, while making the illustrations which they consider necessary to any successful theory.
