Both parents and children would have to be deaf, dumb and blind today to escape the sex depicted so blatantly in books, magazines, TV and the movies. But putting sex into its proper sphere is as difficult for today's parents as it was for theirs when they tried to explain the sexual development of the human body in an old-fashioned ""heart to heart"". Consequently the publication of Dr. Audrey Kelly's fine study of A Catholic Parent's Guide To Sex Education not only fulfills a basic need, but goes far beyond nearly anything available on the subject in the field today in its excellence and scope. This one book will provide parents with adequate sex instruction for their children from toddler to pre-marital stage. The author feels that most parents do not understand the normal anatomy and physiology of their own bodies, so she accurately and intelligibly describes the organs concerned in human sexual life and their functions. She stresses that it is the healthy attitude towards sex and marriage given to a child in his pre-school years that will manifest itself in his thinking on the subject in later years. Taking each phase of a child's development, she sketches in the questions that he is likely to ask, and the answers a parent should be prepared to give -- always stressing God's plan in creation. Far more advance and explicit information is given for teen age guidance, so that parents can impart to this age group a full basic knowledge of the main facts of sex seen in the light of Christian teachings on morality and family life. Dr. Kelly's chapters on contraception, artificial insemination, perversion and venereal disease are invaluable for parents who generally have too little knowledge of these subjects, and yet should be able to warn their young adults about the abuses of sex. This book is MUST reading for thoughtful parents intent on raising their children in an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust, and with physical love seen always in its true perspective as a unique gift of God.
