You Can Relax built up an astounding sale. This is, perhaps, a trifle less keyed to popular consumption, it is not over-simplified, but yet within the range of the average reader, and sound common sense. A neuro-psychiatrist explains the causes behind the effects of nervous tension, and supplies physiological and psychological props to alleviate the tension. He shows how neuroses are the outgrowth of conditioned reflexes which have their seat in the interbrain, and how a neurosis becomes a physical disease with physical effects, ranging from asthma to ulcers to heart conditions. The first step towards cure is muscular relaxation, muscle by muscle; the second step, proper sleep. From there there is progress to proper activity, play, thinking, self analysis, finding work which is really satisfactory, and finally learning to handle attitudes towards people. Self-expression, in service to mankind, is the final recommendation. Good for these days.
