Dr. Whelan, unable to make up her mind whether she wanted to have a baby or not, has written this book for others in the same (non)condition which will still leave you with ten dollars worth of Maybe. In between she did her own interview-survey of some two hundred people and obviously she's read around the subject from Freud to Margaret Mead to Ellen Peck. It seems there are no right reasons to have one but there are many wrong ones for those split between the pronatal pitch and the new anti-parenthood pressure. There are however some ""rational triggers"" (""deepening a well-grounded marriage"" as against gluing a bad one together; having a child of a different sex; etc.), some considerations of the psychic pleasures and deprivations; and at the end some incidentals on costs, adoption, etc. . . . A Parents' Magazine article extended; color it pink or blue and then have twins.
