THE NEW GERMAN EMPIRE

This is quite an exciting and frightening book. It requires careful attention, for a tremendous amount of information is crammed into brief space. Dr. Borkenau, who speaks with the authority of one who was active in the left wing of Germany's labor movement, a research fellow at Frankfurt University, and more recently living in England and doing extensive research on political and economic problems, has presented the result of his findings in a book which reveals the extent of Germany's aims. Occasionally, one feels that he sees all with a jaundiced eye, interpreting the conditions of German penetration -- economic, political, factual -- as signs of definite aggressive aims. He shows how she has strengthened her hold on Eastern Europe by her bloodless (?) conquests; how she has weakened the tie between Belgium and France; how she keeps Denmark and the Netherlands in a state of fear of military conquest; how she has established economic claims in Sweden, Finland, the Balkans; how she uses Italy as a catspaw; how she penetrates with Nazi theory such countries as Switzerland. Her aim is world wide, via conquest and economic slavery in Europe; by disintegration of empire of the great powers; by using colonial outposts as a basis of trading what she doesn't want for what she does. A challenge to democracy, which stands in the way of the Fascist world power.
