Designed for the interested layman, this is a literate and facile treatment of Earth's towering roof-tops, ageless lures of explorers, scientists, settlers and sportsmen, majestic gods and menacing devils to the ancients who regarded them with awe. Dr. Lane describes the various types of mountains, the fold, the block and the dislocation, their plateaus and passes and valleys; and those eccentrics of nature- the fire mountains or volcanoes. From Asia's monarchs, the Himalayas, their neighbors, the bleak and wild Karakoru and the Hindu Kush Mountains, this also tells of China's little known Amnyi Machen that may rival Everest for its height, Africa's isolated ranges, Europe's better known Alpe, the vampire-haunted Carpathians, and that smugglers' paradise- the Pyrenees, as well as the most mysterious of all- the under-sea giants. For any reader interested in arresting natural phenomena, but with little technical knowledge of the subject, this is good reading.
