The story of anaesthesia, less dramatized than Rene Fulop-Miller's Triumph Over Pain (Bobbs-Merrill, 1938), less well presented, but more extensive in its coverage -- particularly of modern drugs. Here are the early narcotics, sedatives, hypnosis, and other pain killing methods; the progress which led to the much disputed discovery of anaesthesia and the long controversies in which four men figured, Wells, Jackson, Morton and Long, -- with an impartial inquiry into the claims -- and credit -- of each. The new gases and others, cyclopropane, cocaine, novocaine, analgesia and twilight sleep, avertin, and the new caudal anal used in childbirth. Conscientious factually, this is a reasonably readable survey of the field -- but I doubt if it will attract too wide an interest.
