THEN A CHILD IS DIFFERENT

A Swiss psychologist discusses both the approach to and actuality of bringing up a retarded child in a small book which is both spiritual and practical in its concerns. From the acceptance which must follow the recognition on the parents' part that their child is ""different"", this gives some guidance on teaching in the home (training is largely habituation), on rules to be observed, chores which can be done by the child, and certain activities which will stimulate the child's dexterity, creativity and powers of concentration. There are short chapters on helping him to walk, speak, eat, etc. along with a few closing remarks on home versus institutional care. A primary, preliminary discussion which is reassuring.
