KIRKUS REVIEW

There has been such a response to the messages of Dr. Peale over radio and television and in his books, articles and columns that one may expect that this book too soon will be among the best-sellers. Dr. Peale's essential message is well known, and in this book he spells out in very simple and concrete fashion how the principles he advocates may be put into practice, for this is a book of techniques. It consists of six parts: (1) Thought Conditioners 40 Bible verses with a brief comment on each. Dr. Peale asserts that these verses if memorized and appropriated ""will give clarity and power to thoughts, peace to your mind, health to your body and vitality to your life."" (2) A Self-Improvement Handbook an outline of the laws governing released, happy and effective living; (3) What's Your Trouble? 14 lessons designed to solve such every-day problems as worry, loneliness, resentment, tension and alcoholism; (4) Spirit Lifters: additional verses to be memorized; (5) You Can Relax rules for the relief of tension- physical, mental and spiritual; (6) The How Cards 10 cards in duplicate each with 10 rules for meeting such every-day situations as ""How to solve a problem"", ""How to break the worry habit"", ""How to get people to like you"". The secret of Dr. Peale's wide-spread appeal is here laid bare. It rests on the simplicity of his message, its constant repetition and its detailing of the techniques by which the principles he advocates may be appropriated.
