LOVE MY CHILDREN

Like many pioneers, Dr. Browne has been overtaken by time. Her life, as described here, is a model for Negroes aspiring to upward mobility combined with service to the black community. Boston-born, Rhode Island bred, she was the first Negro woman to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard's Graduate School of Education. She then returned to the South and worked to upgrade Negro education by college teaching, by organizing and administering nursery schools (that could have been prototypes for Head Start), by acting as educational consultant in establishing reading programs for children from lower class backgrounds. Dr. Browne, who has taught at North Carolina College since 1948, now heads its Department of Educational Psychology. She and her pastor husband are active in community and church work (described here) and have personally helped numerous people make notable careers. Her life, presented here partly as exemplar, partly as testament to an attainable American dream, will inspire numerous readers--and rightly, she is a sensible, sensitive, hard-working woman.
