"Up! Up! Waiters! Alligators! Up folks! Up in elevators!" Would that the real Dr. Seuss could stand up and tell the world that he wouldn't be caught dead writing such routinely perky prose, with the word up occurring 48 times in a 178-word book but with the rabbit, worm, frogs, feet, etc., all exhorted to get UP! with such down-bringing exclamation-pointed persistence that it's no wonder the kid on the last page answers, "No up. I'm sleeping in today." Turn it down.
