Dr. Potts is not likely to supplant Spock even though his book is intended as a basic one but it is much more specific and extensive than either of the season's forerunners- Holmes' Letters to Tricia (p. 1261) and Hellyer's Your Child and you (p. 100). He was for many years Surgeon in Chief at Chicago's Children's Memorial Hospital and his is an all purpose book which goes through the first years and is full of explicit information--how much a baby should cry and why, or what to look for in a baby sitter. Along with the predictables, feeding, training, discipline, he goes into many illnesses beyond the expected ones (heart, cancer) but on the whole the book is much more interested in care, than handling, and Spock's book will remain indispensable in its behavioral approach which is a minimal part of this book. However, Dr. Potts is firm in what he has to say, something the mother needs as well as the child.
