An able practitioner in the field of historical fiction makes use of the first English stay in Bermuda as part of Devonshire Tamar Gates' search for the fiance who failed to appear for their wedding. Rob Morgan, a Welshman, is not approved by her father, Squire Gates, but does win the favor of her uncle, Sir Thomas Gates, who persuades the Squire to agree to Tamar's marriage. But Rob does not turn up before the sailing of the Virginia expedition so Tamar leaves, jilted and hurt, with her father, uncle, and Admiral Somers, and the assiduous attentions of Leftenant Evelyn fail to allay her worries over Rob. Storms blow the ships off their course, they are cast away in the ""Bermoothes"", and their stay there is clouded by threats of mutiny, murder, death and the dissension caused by the clash of authority between Gates and Somers. But Tamar learns that Rob has been impressed and, when they finally make their way to Virginia, not only finds him but has all of Forrester's treachery revealed. Here the coral islands, the starving garrisons of Virginia, and early New World history background a troubled romance effectively.
