SURFER!

What induces a normal healthy high school senior to get up every morning at 4:30 for 100 days in a row? A ride on a surf boat, naturally. Pete Marlin was the president of the Neptunes, a group dedicated to the art of surfing. While their major interest was in improving their skills, they had social problems to face -- how to keep from having their reputation hurt by the hodads, gremmies, and kooks (yes, there is a glossary), or their territory impinged upon by the swimmers (who don't really count anyway) or wiped out by a conscientious geologist trying to change the coast line to preserve the beach. And there is internal dissension too, caused mostly by Duke, a rich boy out to get his own way and willing to undermine the group for the good of his own project (to form a professional jazz group with Pete as pianist). In between surfing and piano playing, Pete manages to keep up his apparently nearly A average at school, so with the assistance of a shark, Pete's buddy and his occasional girl friend finally manage to convince him to live up to his potential, cut out the band (naturally not the surfing) and go on to college. It's mostly foam, trying to catch a ride on a wave of current teenage interest in surfing.
