A detailed story of a woman's search for health, with the succession of diagnoses, of treatments, of hospitalizations, of errors, of good doctors and bad, of good psychiatrists and bad, of modern medicine on its seamy side. An indictment of the medical approach and handling of obscure chronic conditions, with little to say that gives one confidence in progress. Presumably, the basic trouble was a strange form of sleeping sickness (the author is slowly improving today), but the doctor to whom she finally returns, acknowledges that inadequate research is responsible for the insufficient knowledge of the disease, Gardening and music seemed to do more than all the doctors put together. Chance for a semi-humorous treatment seems lost in a matter-of-fact record. An unusual subject, reasonably well handled.
