Not an easy- nor a pleasant book to read -- but one that challenges our comfortable sense of the rightness of our ways, and makes us reassess our position in the world. The U.S.A. success story is etched in sharp outline, the progress from our incredibly fortunate beginnings to the position of Spoiled Giant. Our complaisant patriotism, our cult of nostalgia- dangerous forerunners to today's plight- are given due consideration, with their culmination in such evidence as Truman's ""Loyalty Order"" with its dangerous implications. The decline of our vaunted security is developed- questions posed, patterns of procedure discussed. Then- the problem of today, our relations with Soviet Russia today and tomorrow, considered. Is the choice only between containment and appeasement, both leading to war? Or is there another choice, in expansion of understanding, weighing the case against the U.S.A. and the more serious case against Russia- and arrival at some approach to functional economy, a working democracy at home.
