The Russians are massing in Afghanistan as the Maharajah of Jammu and Kashmir prepares to meet the boy Maharajah of Mysore together with Her Imperial Majesty's Viceroy in India, Lord Elgin. But a mullah (incendiary of great influence) from Kashmir plans to set Hindu against Moslem and both against the British. Captain Ogilvie, at first stained to disguise himself as a native, infiltrates the mullah's secret headquarters but not soon enough to avoid the arrival of the terrible moment: the boy maharajah's assassination at the height of a religious ceremony. Hurtling plot, quick dialogue, unintentionally serio-comic British officers rattling their muskets and mustaches, and much torture. But then, ""India was a cruel land. . .
