Glossy, full-color close-up photos on each page greatly enhance these introductions to garden ecology. Each title describes how seeds sprout, grow leaves and flowers, and finally produce new seeds to continue the cycle. Garden pests (slugs, aphids, rabbits, mice) and garden helpers (bees, earthworms, ladybugs, snakes, toads, turtles and swallows) are introduced. Flower Garden describes annuals, biennials, perennials and bulbs; Vegetable Garden, however, fails to define vegetables at all; photos of strawberries and tomatoes (both berries) and of cucumbers and pumpkins (both fruits) may cause a young reader to wonder just what is a vegetable. Basic instructions are included for stating plants from seed indoors; for transplanting; and for outdoor gardening. Attractive, though somewhat lacking in scientific precision. Brief glossaries.
