GRAPHS

Strictly an adjunct to math classes, this is a diagrammatic introduction to the uses and execution of graphs of all kinds--the line, the bar, the pie, and the picture. The level of information is geared somewhat higher than the level of address, so the child who can cope with the more advanced abstractions may find little challenge in the presentation and the child who needs this simplified approach may be overwhelmed by the increasingly difficult concepts (percentage for one, and the very important section on statistics that ""lie"" or mislead). The technique here is step-by-step construction of progressively complex graphs to chart the stories told in the tables of figures that are well enough chosen to be intrinsically interesting themselves. There are notes on tools like protractors and decimal rulers, and clear illustrations throughout prepared by Mr. Lowenstein.
