PERSONAL MEMOIRS OF U.S. GRANT

With another war just behind us- and another General a candidate for the presidency, U.S. Grant is a same often heard. Perhaps that makes particularly timely this reissue, with introduction, notes, illustrations and maps, of one of the great military biographies of literature. Grant wrote under stress of need for money- and knowledge of impending death from cancer. He allowed neither of these factors to interfere with his sincere determination to contribute his story, his appraisal of men and events, for the record. That the man himself comes through was to him secondary, but it is what enlivens the pages today. Some hundred pages summarize his early years; when war came he offered his services, and as war progressed he gave of his atmost to the cause. The result is a record of facts, objective, fair, and adding up to a portrait of a military genius. The very simplicity of his style keeps it from dating.
