But gradually she won the doubters and the scoffers, she made true friends, she kept a job as teacher, she proved a heroine when the floods came, and she almost buried her own distaste for poverty and sordidness in appreciation of the sterling qualities of her Russian people...This book will almost inevitably have a hurdle to take in that it stresses a period which these sympathetic to Soviet Russia would rather forget. But it has an authentic ring of history.
