LETTERS AND NUMBERS FOR NEEDLEPOINT

Taken primarily from old patterns originally designed for cross-stitching, these 28 alphabets and 11 sets of numerals provide a broad range of choices for signatures and dates on canvas. Parker's tasteful selection includes plain and fancy styles in several sizes, some using more than one color, and offers attractive ways to combine them for monograms. She recommends cross-stitch for one-line letters even if the canvas features tent stitch, and discusses the manageability of particular letters: symmetrical ones are easy, F and P are top-heavy, and ""J always looks as if it would tumble to the right."" A O.K. A-O.K.
