HOLLYWOOD THROUGH THE BACK DOOR

Nondescript and unimportant -- a book that makes little contribution to the general understanding of the picture industry. The story of an English novelist who thought he could break into the pictures without any pull -- and of how he was disillusioned. First third mildly interesting as he gives his impressions of a dance hall, a burlesque, Aimee Semple McPherson, etc. But when he gets to Hollywood he wastes a great deal of his own and the reader's time waiting for something to happen, and he brings in a great many names for the sake of bringing them in. His end is like his beginning -- failure, and he returns to England, where he should have stayed in the first place.
