PREHISTORIC RELIGION by E. O. James

PREHISTORIC RELIGION

By

Publisher: Praeger

It is surprising how much may be deduced about the religious practices of prehistoric man from a careful study of archaeological material. Professor E. O. Jones, Professor Emeritus of the History of Religion at the University of London, has brought together in one volume a great deal of widely scattered material form decorated caves and rock shelters and other pre-historic sites and excavations and from many museums. From the study of the various practices of the dead he draws probable conclusions about conceptions of after-life. His study is next of the cultures developed around the mysterious processes of birth and fertility from the Paleolithic to the end of the Bronze Age, Similarly he considers the ""vegetation cycle,"" and finally the concept of the Sky-God and its relation to that of Mother earth. There is much here of general interest, but especially will this work be valuable to all who are interested in the development of the worship faculty in man. It's a good reference book for church and general libraries.
