Masao Masuto of the Beverly Hills Police returns from a Japan vacation to find that a bizarre case has unfolded in his absence: engineer Robert Mackenzie has been found dead in his bathtub, victim of intentional electrocution, and his alcoholic wife Eve (despite an initial claim that the dead man isn't her husband) has been put on trial--but without a shred of real evidence! Why did the powers-that-be want (on the federal level, it seems) Mrs. Mackenzie tried and acquitted? Masuto is puzzled--especially after Mrs. M. dies in a car ""accident."" Was the dead man really Mackenzie? Or a twin brother? And who is now trying to kill the gently relentless Masuto? Intriguing questions, rather disappointing (espionage-related) answers: a talky, only half-satisfying addition to the classy Masuto series.
