A novel of farm life in Wisconsin today -- and the passing of the life which once represented so much in the American background. Here we have a new strain, a far cry from the ""100% American"" of As the Earth Turns, The Farm, State Fair, for the Pelletiers carried down a mixed strain, French and Indian, and in Louis, who alone of his generation loved the farm that had given them life, but feared the slavery it imposed, is recognized the legacy of race, of character, of experience, the meaning of the past as interpreter of the present. A good ""family"" story, good farm story, and a sympathetic presentation of real characters, and the impact of a new civilization on an old. There is much of pathos, but there is gaiety too.
