KIRKUS REVIEW

Lover Carmichael of Monkey Shines (1952) is back again and with his Northfield gang who played little League baseball in the earlier book is now ready for his first football season. Lover has also inherited the Northfield Weekly News from his aunt which Doofy Knowlton, a girl in his class at school, persuades him to run. A sophisticated observant and high humored narrative follows Lover and Sleepy through gridiron anguish and Lover and Goofy through crusading journalism. And in its more serious aspects, the book sets a sharp focus on fourteen year old growing pains, on the ideals of journalism which here aim to better the relationship between Northfield proper and a new housing settlement and reflect the rewards of a hearty community spirit.
