The aspiring gardener who is planning to add a rock garden will find this a practical handbook. Mr. Anderson recognizes the necessity of step-by-step procedure, from locating the prospective rock garden, constructing it within the limitations of the site, and selecting suitable plants, bulbs, shrubs for cultivation and propagation. Some of us are familiar with his Penguin paperback; this in hard covers includes additional plants, and modification of some rather arbitrary statements in the earlier edition. The reader should bear in mind some variations in demand of soil, exposure, growth prospects in the longer, drier growing season here. Doretta Klaber's Rock Garden Plants should serve as a salutary brake.
