This most recent addition to the generally well received Boys' Book Series provides an excellent introduction to the geology of mountains, their history and the living conditions that obtain in mountainous areas. All of this is necessary background to the introductory material on mountaineering techniques which makes up the latter half of the book. The emphasis is on Europe and the British Isles where rock climbing and mountain scaling is a popular sport. The classic approaches to the various terrains are simply described and made visual by an ample number of photographs and line drawings. The chapters on climbing and the history of the sport carry a great deal of information on equipment and safety measures. The responsibilities of lead climbers and the spread of duties among roped parties is outlined and explained. A brief chapter on mountain-based winter sports is followed by a short section that tells youngsters how to go about preparing themselves for the rugged sport of climbing. The increasing number of American mountain clubs indicates a growing need for this sort of material.
