BAUHAUS AND BAUHAUS PEOPLE

Further celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus and the endurance of its mystique, this assembles teachers, students and some who ""cooperated as friends"" for reminiscence and reflection. Each is briefly profiled, then has his say--at greater or lesser length (Gerhard Marcks' is pointedly titled ""My short stay in Weimar""). Contributions are variously personal or programmatic; emphasis may be on the spiritual or technological, reflecting breaks in the Bauhaus continuity and the divergent interests of its participants. Director Gropius, looking backward, rues that so much time was spent countering obstacles arising from ""national and local hostility,"" but tempers his general pessimism with ""you must never believe an old man when he says something is impossible""; alfred apsler, undaunted, marches onward in lower case. From student parties to ""I fondly remember fabric studies,"" from ""the ABC of form"" to Hannes Meyer's stormy dismissal, a retrospective with more vitality than the massive Wingler compendium; different in nature, it should also attract a wider audience.
