This is a stunning book, and while it overlaps a good many other books in the field it is self sufficient in itself, and, in many ways, seems more complete than the others with which I am familiar. American square, circle and contra dances- 81 in all-are covered with music, calls, instructions, descriptions for each. One section of consecutive action pictures illustrates basic movements arbitrarily chosen and shown in photographs for demonstration. An appendix lists square dance albums and records, bibliography, etc. The list of dances by alphabetical arrangement, classification, the advice to callers, to dancers, and the index, all contribute to make this a workable handbook. Useful for those who know something about the subject and for beginners and groups as well.
