Several times a week, for many months, ""This is London"" brings to countless listeners the assurance that the grand old city has come through another 24 hours. Here, in book form, are the broadcasts of the first sixteen months of war, and they ""read"" almost better than they ""listen"". As a unit, they give a day by day picture of London and other parts of England from which Murrow has broadcast. Here is the picture of destruction and death; of building and hope; here is the story of Chamberlain's withdrawal and the rise of Churchill; here are epic descriptions of London, bombed night and day, still carrying on; here is the saga of Dunkirk, the stand of the R.A.F. But above all here is the spirit of a people who do not know defeat. There is a recognizable gamble in a book which is a compilation of broadcasts; but these are broadcasts that deserve permanent form, and that are worth reading as a living record.
