van der Elsken's photographs are a striking record of his stay in Central Africa and not only present many of the men, women and children he saw but also make vivid aspects of their culture in the pictures of rites and ceremonies, dances, the market place, magic and their own paintings. There is a section on a safari which follows the hunting and tracking that leads to the kill --antelope, wart hog, hartebeest, buffalo, elephant -- and includes many sidelights on the hunting. Comment by this Dutch photographer, arranged by Dutch journalist Jan Vrijman, follow the whole series of pictures in a separate booklet inside the back cover. Effective and informative, this is so something to look at.
