A bonny romance of Old England, with great charm and old time flavor. The title refers to the reckless law-breakers who hold up the gentry in their fine coaches in Devonshire lanes en route to festive occasions. The time is England of about 1800. And the chief figure is the ""wise woman"", gifted in herbs and healing over man and beast, and in hiding her renegade son, the highwayman, in getting messages out of the great dark prison for the Frenchmen imprisoned there and conniving at their escapes. There's romance and adventure and humor in the telling. The best thing in straight fiction Phillpotts has done recently.
