The family moves from East Orange, New Jersey, to a run-down farm on the Des Moines Hiver and Carol at first finds it difficult to cope with the new situations. The neighbors and High School classmates are kindness personified which makes things easier. The big treat comes in a trip to Des Moines to visit a friend of mother's and to go to the State Fair. At the time of the harvesters' day on the farm, Carol is Frantic until she receives welcome though unexpected help from her Girl Bcout friend. She shows courage and patience when she is bed-ridden after a very serious fall which burts her back. Carol develops steadily.
