...lies in California's Imperial Valley and when Josefa Gomez and her family inherit it, it proves a stimulus for everyone. However, when Mama Josefa, Papa Manuel, their oldest son, Paco, and all the others arrive, they find not only a tax debt but the hostility of the Pfenners, their German neighbors who want to buy the Gomez land and make improvements -- of which they are sure the Mexicans are incapable. Their derision acts as a sharp spur for the newcomers. Paco, who wants to be an engineer, gets helpful advice from his friend, Mark Holmes, and he makes friends too with Ramon, a wet-back whose surliness disappears when he is finally given a chance to make an honest living. A sensible smoothing of differences here.
