The story involves a Pennsylvania Dutch farm girl, her mother and a wild luck. Each small incident that leads to the duck's eventual rejoining of his own ind provides Ada's mother with a platform for the expression of another platitude. Ada spends most of her waking hours walking and talking to the duck. After a year, when Clyde the duck waddles off to the creek, Ada grieves. Considering the heavy underlining of her mother's other minute lectures, the commentary to Ada on the nature and degree of love in its give and take seems obtuse, although this concept is unquestionably a tough and valid one from which even adults are known to run. Too any prior sermons drain strength from the final message.
