The author and her young sister, poor, alone, decided to stake a claim in South Dakota and homestead it. From a discouraging start, in a desolate land, with few neighbors, they make their way. First through school teaching and running a press. Then a move to the site of a land lottery as general storekeeper, newspaper editor, Indian traders. They do a grand job against hazards of man and nature. But they find it exciting. One of them marries; the other moves west. Good human document, not particularly distinguished in style, but unquestionably interesting. For the Mary Kidder Rak market, and so on. Good plus sale for older girls.
