THAT REMARKABLE MAN: JUSTICE OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES

Pub Date: Sept. 21st, 1967
Publisher: Little, Brown

In no way remarkable is this pleasant account of comfortable domesticity, of warm friendships, of travel and parties and hard work; it could be the Girls' Life of Holmes--except that most girls won't be drawn to the subject in the first place. Holmes' primary significance--as a legal philosopher--is suggested but not developed, and the satisfactions of such a career are stated rather than shown. More dispassionate and detailed than the Judson biography, but not pointed or analytical enough for the older reader, this can be recommended only for the few situations where interest warrants.
