CHAMPIONS OF THE FOUR FREEDOMS by Edith Patterson Meyer

CHAMPIONS OF THE FOUR FREEDOMS

By

Publisher: Little, Brown

Both the value and the limitation of this account of the Americans who contributed to the establishment of the Four Freedoms is apparent from the Table of Contents. The list of champions--from Zenger to Penn to Jacob Riis to Martin Luther King--is predictably familiar; it is also regrettably ""safe"" and unimaginative. Libraries that need more brief biographies of the above-named-plus Lovejoy, Holmes, the Lords Baltimore, Jefferson, Gompers, Carver, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt--will find these dependable if uninspiring. Julia Clifford Lathrop, first Children's Bureau Chief, and Linus Pauling (still controversial) are fresh faces. but all the others have been bottled better before.
