OPERATION DEEPFREEZE

An eyewitness account covers four Polar expeditions for the author made two Arctic missions in 1946 and 1948, and two Antarctic in 1939 and 1946 and details the preparations for and accomplishments to date of the current project as he was reassigned to the South Pole project for the International Geophysical Year, 1957-1958. For Deepfreeze spent a long time on paper and in preview in Washington and other parts of the United States when crews for different purposes assembled and lined up their requirements, equipment and personnel so that all contingencies would be accounted for, and took off in 1954 for establishments and constructions against the settlement of Deepfreeze II in 1957. After the voyage south, come the check of the bases, the new installations, the daily life and the activities; there are the flights and the accidents and the emergencies, the work of the various units and machinery and the unexpected that demanded the most of their resourcefulness, and the spirit and morale of the whole task force. The potentialities of the great mass and the contacts with other national groups are part of Dufek's story and the overall is an immediate picture of a tremendous project, seen through intimate association, in personal, expert terms.
