THE GALLEON FROM MANILA

A book for older boys and girls than her previous ones,- Benny the Bulldozer, Toughie and His Trailer Truck and so on -- this is fast-moving adventure with lots of color. Felipe, 16-year old son of the Duke of Torres, yearned to be an officer under Admiral de Anguello, but was told he was too young. In an abortive attempt to prove his manhood, Felipe plays a valiant part in an effort to stop smuggling, and finds himself a prisoner of the French. On a long voyage to the new world, Felipe holds his own against the French Admiral and his cruel first mate -- and in an escape from the Encarnacion during a battle against the British, Felipe conquers the Admiral, and gets the boat to a Spanish ship, and proves his right to serve as an officer.
