CATHOLICISM IN AMERICA

A fine symposium of seventeen authors considers the many facets of the Catholics' position in contemporary American life. In his foreword, George N. Shuster sets the stage for the essays -- on present day subjects, the question of the intentions of Catholics if and when they are a majority in the United States, the dissonances in Catholic thought. The Catholic in politics, science, literature, art, censorship, social reform, internal relationships -- these are discussed by able and enlightened men. Among them we find John Cogley, William Clancy, Walter Kerr, Erik von Kuehnelt-Leddin; Reinhold Niebuhr represents the Protestant view, Will Herberg the Jewish. Thoughtful reading for aware Catholics and their non-Catholic friends.
