In 1938, a Presbyterian minister Dr. J. Calvitt Clarke founded the China's Children Fund to aid the thousands of children left homeless, sick and starving by the war. Today Dr. Clarke's plan (now called the Christian Children's Fund) aids 418 orphanages to in 46 countries through its foster parent idea whereby a sponsor ""adopts"" a needy child overseas or in this country. When relating straight factual material the book unfortunately sounds like an elementary Sunday school tract, but when the children, the sponsors and the missionaries own words are quoted the effect is often inspiring and heartbreakingly sobering. Certainly schools and colleges might well want this for their libraries, but the style and tone would not seem to have the qualities necessary for popular appeal.
