GROWING UP IN NEW ZEALAND

Too bad this isn't better, for I know of very little available material on New Zealand and there is increasing importance in filling in factual background on the colonial parts of the British Empire. The facts are there, there is a good sense of the round of life, city and country, of scenery, of school days, of holidays, of the activities and games, the country dances, the things that are a part of New Zealand boys' and girls' lives as distinctive from American children. A good deal of legend and history is worked into the story. The one thing that hurts it materially is a recurrent note of condescension, of talking-down to the readers.
