The chief value of this collection for the student of Henry James' work lies in the new light they throw on some of his own beginnings, even to the fresh approach to James' critical appraisal of his own work. These, with the seven in Mordell's Traveling Companions (1919) were published in periodicals and comprised the only ones he did not himself republish in book form. Miss Kenton, an authority on James, analyzes the individual stories, their places in James development, the range of interest, background, style- in a rewarding introduction. Each story is prefaced by a bibliographical note. The stories- while uneven in interest provide a high entertainment level.
