KIRKUS REVIEW

The fun here is in knowing what the farm family doesn't, as--off to the side in inconspicuous black and white--they puzzle over their missing coins, socks, ribbons, and eye-glasses while Pebbles the pack rat, on the softly colored center stage, makes off with his loot and secretes it in his new home inside a scarecrow's boot. But Pebbles' hunger drives him at last to an indiscretion: the family dog is more alert than the folks are and won't stand for anyone stealing his bone. Thus is the thief revealed and routed--in a satisfying end to a passing but amiable encounter.
