MOUSEKIN'S WOODLAND BIRTHDAY by Edna Miller

MOUSEKIN'S WOODLAND BIRTHDAY

Miller's variously instructive Mousekin is seen here in the usual gentle watercolors as a meeting of egg and sperm, a ball of cells traveling along a passageway to his mother's womb (though the pictures seem to show him floating gently through the air), born and cleaned and nursed along with his brothers and sisters, later observing a box turtle lay her eggs (the turtle turns and tells Mousekin, ""Not all creatures are born alive. Some are hatched from eggs""), then scooting to shelter at the approach of a human family (the mother bulging with pregnancy). Those who prefer to dispense their sex education in a softly glowing package will find Mousekin an appealing alternative to the birds and the bees.
