A good background book for travel in Haiti, where the author spent sufficient time to get into the rhythm of the place and the people. She learned to know the people, she tried to find a solution to the color question, she attempted to attend voodoo rites, in vain. She learned at first hand the facts of Haiti's bloody history and saw too much of the atmosphere for her nerves. Not as sensational as might be expected, but a deeper penetration of the place than a mere travel guide.
